Tags, favorites and ratings

Label items with tags, mark favorites with a heart, rate them with stars, and filter by all three.

Tags, favorites and ratings are three ways to mark your blocks, prompts and documents so you can find them again:

  • Tags are labels you make up, such as “sales” or “draft”. An item can have as many as you like.
  • Favorites are items you’ve marked with a heart.
  • Ratings are one to five stars.

Tags are part of the Tags feature, and favorites and ratings are part of the Favorites & ratings feature. If you don’t see them, click Settings in the sidebar, then Features, and turn them on. Turning a feature off hides it but keeps your tags, hearts and stars. See Show or hide features.

Add tags

You add tags while you create or edit an item, in the Tags box in its Properties panel:

  • A block: on the Blocks screen, while creating or editing it.
  • A Static prompt: on the Prompts screen, while creating or editing it.
  • A Dynamic prompt or a document: on the Build screen.
  1. Click in the Tags box.
  2. Type a tag.
  3. Press Enter or type a comma. The tag becomes a chip.
  4. Add more tags the same way.
  5. Save the item: the disk icon on Blocks and Prompts; on Build, Save as Dynamic, Save as Static, Update Prompt or Apply (for a document, Save, Update or Apply). Ctrl+S works on all three screens.

As you type, up to six tags you already use appear under the box. Click one, or use the Up and Down arrow keys and Enter, to add it. Using the suggestions keeps your tags consistent: tags are case-sensitive, so “Sales” and “sales” are two different tags.

To take a tag off, click the X on its chip, or press Backspace in the empty box to remove the last one. Then save the item.

Tags are saved with the item, so changes to them are kept only when you save.

Where tags show

  • A colored dot and the tag’s name on tiles. Each tag always has the same color.
  • Badges under the item’s name when you open it.
  • The Tags line when you point to a row in List view.
  • The Tags list in the sidebar, which lists every tag in use, A to Z.

Searching for a tag’s name finds the items that have it. See Find anything.

Filter by tag

Use the Tags list in the sidebar. It filters Blocks, Prompts and Explorer, and the list of blocks on the Build screen.

  • Click a tag to show only items with that tag (this replaces any other tags you selected). Click it again to clear it.
  • Ctrl+click more tags to add them. Items with any of the selected tags show.
  • Ctrl+click a selected tag to take it out of the filter.

A bar above the list reads Filtered to tags: with a chip for each tag. Click the X on a chip to take that tag off, or click Clear filters in the toolbar to clear every filter.

A tag filter works together with a folder filter: you see items in the folder that have the tag.

Click the arrow next to Tags to fold the list away.

Delete a tag everywhere

Deleting a tag takes it off every block and prompt that has it, archived ones included. This can’t be undone.

  1. In the sidebar’s Tags list, point to the tag.
  2. Click the trash icon that appears.
  3. Read how many items have the tag, for example This will remove the tag from 5 items (3 blocks, 2 prompts). This can’t be undone.
  4. Click Delete Permanently.

There’s no separate list of tags to manage: a tag exists while at least one item has it. The sidebar lists only tags on items that aren’t archived.

Mark a favorite

Click the heart on any block, prompt or document. The heart fills in. Click it again to take it off. You’ll find the heart:

  • on its tile,
  • in the Fav column in List view,
  • under its name when you open it,
  • on the Archive screen’s Archived tab.

You can also right-click an item and click Add to favorites or Remove from favorites.

Your favorites show in the Favorites widget on Home.

Rate an item

Click a star: the first star for one star, the fifth for five. Click the same star again to clear the rating. The stars are in the same places as the heart, except that in List view they have their own Rating column. They’re also in the right-click menu under Rating.

Hearts and stars are saved as soon as you click. They don’t change an item’s Last modified date and don’t add a version.

If your personal library syncs to your other PCs, your hearts and stars are the same on all of them (more).

When you open a Dynamic prompt on the Prompts screen, Blocks avg next to its stars shows the average of your ratings for the blocks it uses, and how many of them are rated, for example “(3 of 5 rated)”. Unrated blocks aren’t counted.

Filter by favorite or rating

Use Favorites & Rating in the sidebar. It filters Blocks, Prompts, Explorer, the Archived tab of the Archive screen, and the list of blocks on the Build screen.

  • Click Favorites to show only favorites. Click it again to show everything.
  • Click a star to show items rated that many stars or more. & up appears next to the stars. Click the same star again to clear it.

The first time you filter by stars, the list switches to sort by rating, highest first. You can change the sort back.

You can also sort by Fav or Rating, and filter the Rating column to values such as Unrated or 4 stars. See Find anything.

In a team library

  • Your stars are your own. Next to them, Team: shows the average rating from everyone in the library and how many people rated it, for example Team: 4.0 (3), or Team: not rated yet. Point to it to see who rated it.
  • Your favorites are your own. They follow you to each of your PCs in the library, and nobody else sees them.
  • Members who can only view a team library can still rate its items and mark them as favorites.
  • Tags are part of the item, so everyone in the library sees them. Only members who can edit can change them.

See Team libraries.

When your library is paused

If your library is paused (you’re on the Free plan with more than 25 blocks or 15 prompts, for example after your 14 days of Pro end), you can’t change hearts, stars or tags until you’re back within the limits. See When your library is paused.
