Expected output
Keep the results an AI tool gave for a block, prompt or document, with the tool and model that gave them.
Expected output is a record of the results an AI tool gave for a block, prompt or document. Each result keeps the text (or a file), the AI tool and the model that gave it, and the date. Use it to keep an example of a good answer, or to see how different tools and models answered the same prompt.
Expected output is a feature you can show or hide. If you don’t see it, click Settings in the sidebar, then Features, and turn on Expected output.
Where to find it
The Expected Output section sits in the right-hand pane, under the text:
- On the Blocks screen, when you click a block.
- On the Prompts screen, when you click a prompt or document.
- On the Build screen, under Preview (or Document).
It starts closed. Click Expected Output to open it. The heading shows how many results there are, for example Expected Output (3). To give it more room, drag its top edge up. With no results, the open section says No expected output recorded yet.

Add a result
-
Click the block, prompt or document, and open the Expected Output section.
-
Click Add result.
-
Paste or type the result in the large box.
-
Under AI Tool, type the tool you used, for example Claude or ChatGPT.
-
Under Model, type the model that gave the result.
-
To keep a file with the result, such as an image or a document the AI made, click Attach file and choose it. Files can be up to 25 MB.

-
Click Save.
Save works once AI Tool and Model are filled in, and the result has text, a file, or both. The new result shows in the section, with the date and time, the tool and the model.
To pick a different file before saving, click Change file. To take the file off, click the x next to its name (Remove attachment).
Look through results
The section shows the newest result first. When there are several, use the arrows (Older entry and Newer entry) to move between them. The line between the arrows says which one you’re on, for example Entry 2 of 3.
An attached image shows in the section. Once the item is saved, click the image to open it full size in your web browser. Other files show as a link with the file’s name and size: click it to save the file.
Results can’t be edited. To change one, add a new result and delete the old one.
Add results before you save
You can add results to a new block or prompt before you’ve saved it, including on the Build screen. Each one shows Saves with this prompt. (or Saves with this block.). They’re saved as soon as you save the block or prompt.
If you leave without saving, PromptMason asks before it discards the item and its results.
If any of them couldn’t be saved, PromptMason says how many, for example Saved. 1 expected output couldn’t be saved — add it again from the saved prompt. Your block or prompt was saved. Open the Expected Output section on it and add those results again.
Delete a result
- Open the Expected Output section and use the Older entry and Newer entry arrows to show the result you want to delete.
- Click Delete.
- Click Delete again next to Delete this entry?
Deleting a saved result can’t be undone: it doesn’t go to Recently deleted. A result you added to an unsaved item is removed straight away, without asking.
What happens to results
- Copying an item. A copy made with Copy in a list gets the original’s results, with their files.
- Export. Export everything covers your personal library, so it includes the results, and their files, on items there. For a team library, an owner exports that library (see Export or import a team library). See Export and import.
- Paused library. While your library is paused you can look at and delete results, but not add new ones. See When your library is paused.

Copy this prompt into Claude, ChatGPT or another AI assistant, and it walks you through it step by step.

Walk me through adding a result to “Expected Output”, attaching a file, and looking back through the results. About PromptMason: a Windows desktop app for building AI prompts from reusable blocks. A person writes blocks (reusable pieces of prompt text), builds prompts from them on the Build screen (or keeps a Markdown document, such as a Skill), and copies a prompt into an AI tool, runs it in PromptMason’s own Chat, or lets a connected AI agent use it through PromptMason’s built-in MCP server (the Chrome extension copies prompts on any website). AI assist, Evaluate and Chat use a local model that runs on the person’s PC, or their own AI provider. The guides are also on PromptMason’s Help screen, and Chat can answer “how do I” questions from them. Libraries hold the blocks and prompts; a person can sync their personal library to their other PCs and share team libraries, both through a folder in cloud storage they already have (OneDrive, Google Drive or Dropbox). Everything synced is encrypted and every edit is signed and checked. A recovery kit (a file plus a code) is the spare copy of the person’s keys, for when every PC is lost. The official guide for this is "Expected output": https://promptmason.ai/docs/expected-output Its full text follows, between the lines.
