AI in PromptMason
Use AI to improve your text, grade it, and run your prompts, with the local model or your own AI provider.
This section covers the parts of PromptMason that use an AI model. PromptMason includes its own AI model, the local model, which runs on your PC and is free on every plan: no API key, no account, and none of your text leaves your computer. You can also connect a cloud AI provider with your own key. You don’t need any of it to write and copy prompts.
The ideas to know first:
- AI assist: a button in the editor that rewrites or drafts the text you’re editing. It only suggests: your text changes when you click Accept.
- Evaluate: gives a saved block, prompt or document a score out of 10 with suggestions, or checks it for private details.
- Chat: the Chat & Browse screen, where you run your saved prompts and read the replies.
- The local model: free, private AI that runs on your PC and works offline once downloaded. See Free, private AI on your PC.
- Your own key: use your own account with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini or xAI (Grok) through an API key, a code from the provider. The provider bills you for what you use.
With the local model, none of your text leaves your PC. With a cloud provider, that provider receives what the feature sends, under its own terms. What AI features send, and where lists what each feature sends, and Privacy in PromptMason covers everything else that can leave your PC.
Your AI apps can also use your library directly through PromptMason’s built-in MCP server.
To begin, download the local model or add your own API key. Then try AI assist on a block, or run a prompt in Chat.

About PromptMason: a Windows desktop app for building AI prompts from reusable blocks. A person writes blocks (reusable pieces of prompt text), builds prompts from them on the Build screen (or keeps a Markdown document, such as a Skill), and copies a prompt into an AI tool, runs it in PromptMason’s own Chat, or lets a connected AI agent use it through PromptMason’s built-in MCP server (the Chrome extension copies prompts on any website). AI assist, Evaluate and Chat use a local model that runs on the person’s PC, or their own AI provider. The guides are also on PromptMason’s Help screen, and Chat can answer “how do I” questions from them. Libraries hold the blocks and prompts; a person can sync their personal library to their other PCs and share team libraries, both through a folder in cloud storage they already have (OneDrive, Google Drive or Dropbox). Everything synced is encrypted and every edit is signed and checked. A recovery kit (a file plus a code) is the spare copy of the person’s keys, for when every PC is lost. The official guide for this is "AI in PromptMason": https://promptmason.ai/docs/ai-in-promptmason Its full text follows, between the lines. Use it as the source of truth, and if anything I see differs from it, tell me rather than guessing. --- This section covers the parts of PromptMason that use an AI model.
