# Web tabs

*Open AI websites such as Claude or ChatGPT in tabs on the Chat screen, put a prompt in the site's message box, and manage bookmarks, history and sign-ins.*

Online version: https://promptmason.ai/docs/web-tabs

Web tabs open websites, such as Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Microsoft Copilot, in tabs on the Chat screen, beside the **Chat** tab. You sign in to each site with your own account, and put a saved prompt in the site's message box from the **Prompts** panel beside it. No API key is needed: the site works as it does in your web browser, under your account there.

## Turn on web tabs

Web tabs need Chat to be on.

1. Click **Settings** in the sidebar, then **Features**.
2. Turn on **Chat**, if it's off.
3. Turn on **Web tabs**. It's shown under **Chat** while Chat is on.

Turning **Web tabs** off hides the web tabs and leaves only the **Chat** tab. The tabs you had open come back when you turn it on again. See [Show or hide features](https://promptmason.ai/docs/features).

## Open a site

1. Click **Chat & Browse** in the sidebar.
2. Click **+** (**New tab**) to the right of the tabs.
3. On the new tab, click a site under **Bookmarks**, or click the address box at the top, type an address, and press Enter.
4. If the site asks you to sign in, sign in with your own account. Some sites open their sign-in page in a small separate window.

The bookmarks start with **Claude**, **ChatGPT**, **Gemini** and **Microsoft Copilot**. You can [change them](#bookmarks).

An address can be a full web address starting with http:// or https://, or a site name such as example.com, which opens as https://example.com. The address box doesn't search the web.

The tabs you have open, and the one you were on, come back the next time you open PromptMason.

## Use a tab

Each tab has a toolbar:

| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| **Back** / **Forward** | Go to the previous or next page. |
| **Reload** | Load the page again. While a page is loading, it shows **Stop**. |
| Address box | Shows the page's address. Type another and press Enter to go there; Esc puts the current address back. |
| Star (**Bookmark this page** / **Remove bookmark**) | Adds the page to your bookmarks, or removes it. |
| **Open in browser** | Opens the page in your usual web browser. |

- **Right-click** in a page for the usual text items (such as **Cut**, **Copy** and **Paste**), **Copy link** and **Open link in browser** on a link, and **Back**, **Forward** and **Reload**.
- **Close a tab** with the X on the tab, or click the tab with the middle mouse button.
- A link that would open a new window opens in a new web tab instead.
- Downloads ask where to save the file.

## Put a prompt in a site's message box

1. Open the site in a web tab, and click in its message box, where you'd type a message.
2. In the **Prompts** area on the right, click the prompt, block or document you want. If the area is hidden, click **Prompts** at the top right of the screen.
3. Click **Run in this tab**.
4. If the prompt has [variables](https://promptmason.ai/docs/variables) that need a value, **Fill in your values** opens. Type a value in each box, then click **Run in this tab** in the form.
5. Check the text in the site's message box, then press Enter on the page (or click the site's own send button) to send it.

PromptMason puts the text in the site's message box and copies it to the clipboard. It never sends the message for you. Under the panel you see either:

- "Added to the message box. Press Enter on the page to send it." The text is in the site's box.

![A web tab with a prompt placed in the site's message box and a line saying to press Enter on the page to send it.](https://promptmason.ai/images/docs/web-tabs-run-in-this-tab-result.webp)

- "Copied. Click the site's message box and paste." The page had no text box selected, so the text was only copied. Click the site's message box, press Ctrl+V, then send.

## Bookmarks

The new-tab page lists your bookmarks. **Settings → Chat → Bookmarks** has the same list.

- **Add one:** click **Add bookmark**, type the **Web address** (for example example.com) and, if you like, a **Name** (without one, the site's address is used), then click **Add bookmark**. Or open the page and click the star in the toolbar.
- **Rename one:** click **Rename** beside it, type the new name, and click **Save**.
- **Remove one:** click **Remove** beside it. It's removed at once, without asking first.

You can keep up to 200 bookmarks.

## History

Below the bookmarks, the new-tab page lists the pages you've opened in web tabs, grouped by **Today**, **Yesterday** and earlier dates.

- Click a page to open it in this tab.
- Type in **Search history** to find pages by their title or address.
- Click the X beside a page (**Remove from history**) to remove it.
- Click **Show more** to see older pages.
- Click **Clear history**, then **Clear history** in the dialog, to remove every page from the list. This can't be undone. You stay signed in to your sites, and your bookmarks aren't affected.

### Choose how long history is kept

1. Click **Settings** in the sidebar, then **Chat**.
2. Under **Browsing history**, leave the switch on and type a number in **Keep pages for** (1 to 365 days; 30 at first). It applies when you leave the box or press Enter.

Choosing a shorter time deletes the pages older than that. To keep no history, turn the **Browsing history** switch off. This deletes the list. If you turn it on again, it starts empty.

## Sign out of every site

**Clear browsing data** signs you out of every site you opened in web tabs and deletes what those sites stored on this computer: cookies, saved site data, the cache, and your browsing history.

1. Click **Settings** in the sidebar, then **Chat**.
2. Click **Clear browsing data**.
3. In **Clear browsing data?**, click **Clear browsing data**.

You see "Browsing data cleared." Open web tabs reload, signed out. This can't be undone: you sign in to each site again. Your chats, bookmarks, blocks, prompts and settings aren't affected, and neither is the list of open tabs, so the tabs reload to the same pages. Close the tabs to remove that list.

## Privacy

- **What you type on a site goes to that site**, under its own terms, as it would in your web browser. PromptMason doesn't save those conversations. To see or delete them, use the site itself.
- **Sites are kept apart from PromptMason.** Web tabs run separately from the rest of the app, so a site isn't given access to your library, your chats or your settings.
- **Sites get few permissions.** A site can copy to the clipboard and go full screen. Camera, microphone and other device access are refused. Links that would open another app don't work, except email links, which open your email app.
- **Your history stays on this computer.** The address and title of each page are stored encrypted. History isn't synced to your other PCs, isn't included when you export, and AI agents and the Chrome extension can't read it.
- **The list of open tabs isn't encrypted.** PromptMason keeps the addresses and titles of the tabs you have open so they come back the next time you open it, and **Clear browsing data** doesn't remove them. To remove them, close the tabs. Your bookmarks (names and addresses) aren't encrypted either.
- **Run in this tab copies the text to the clipboard** as well as putting it in the site's box, and it stays there until you copy something else. Windows clipboard history, if you've turned it on, may keep it too.

For more on what leaves your PC, see [Privacy in PromptMason](https://promptmason.ai/docs/privacy-overview).
